Finally, the weather was great for fishing yesterday.  But the fishing wasn't great.  We didn't boat a fish all afternoon and every report I saw had similar results.  At best a few had 2 or 3 fish and they fished all day to get them.

If I ever get my hands on that Ground Hog . . .

If we ever see some warmer temps I believe the fishing will be incredible.  A few more days of sunshine and a little less rain will go a long, long way.

The fish are there, if you can only plan your trip to coincide with the weather.

All in all we have had only 1 or 2 days a week to get on the water.  We recovered well from the freeze, now its time for the wind and the rain to subside.  On the days we can get out we are finding decent numbers of fish.  The main problem is that after the fronts push through we are bombarded by high pressure, which makes for a beautiful day but really hurts fishing overall.

If you can get out while the pressure is dropping you will find the fish eating and eating well.  One day we stayed out until it began to rain and the last hour or so was incredible.  Not only were the fish in a feeding frenzy, they were swallowing the entire jig head.  If you were throwing a suspending bait the fish were practically dragging the rod out of your hand when they hit.

It is hard to plan a trip very far in advance so watch the forecast daily and if you can find a window of opportunity in between fronts jump on it!

Mother Nature has struck once again.  With temps barely reaching above freezing, and winds gusting to 30 mph I doubt anyone was on the water in the past few days.  However, with the temperature on the rise and light winds forecast for the early part of the week, the fishing should bounce back to the same if not better than we've had the past 2 weeks.

Once the tides return to normal the flats should turn on and mid-bay fishing should resume to the usual "Winter" pattern.  This time of year suspending baits ar a very lightly weighted soft plastic should do the trick.  I hope to have some good reports by the end of the week.

We weathered the cold again today, but did not get the results we were looking for.  Fishing West Bay again, we left the dock at 8 o'clock.  We couldn't find a keeper for the first couple of hours.  even though I think they were there, the big fish just wouldn't bite, or they were getting beat out by the little ones.

Finally all at once, the rods began to double up with a few keepers.  Included in the mix were a couple of large Gulf Trout.  When the bite stopped we turned around for a second drift and we missed the school.  After turing around and readjusting we moved through them again.

As the day came to an end, we had caught around 20 fish, but only managed to box 6.

This week finally provided some nice days to get on the water.  Sunday we had some nice fish in the box from West Bay with some topping 4 pounds.

Tuesday we had a nice ENE breeze and an incoming tide throughout mid day offering a great opportunity in West Bay.  The morning was a little slow for us, but we caught about 15 trout between 1 and 230 before the rain set in.  We only had a couple of good fish in the box, but others reported in with the majority of the fish in the 3-4 Pound range.

Thursday we headed back to West, but the winds were very light and the fog was so thick we couldn't find the water we were looking for.  Finally when the fog lifted a bit we were able to see the color changes in the water and get on a few fish.  We had two in the box in the 3lb range with the rest coming in around 2lbs.

As long as we can get on the water, I predict we will be able to get on some good fish.  Remember that this time of year, a "Chamber of Commerce Day" is better on the golf course than on the bay.  Light winds and clear blue skies add up for a tough day on the water in most cases.  Strong tide movement and a good breeze can go a long way on the water right now.  And remember, It's never too cold to fish!

Sunday was supposed to be the best day so far this month.  The forecast called for fog in the morning and clearing off to partly cloudy skies and a high near 70 degrees.  Yeah, in Houston!  I scheduled my trip at 9 am to give the fog a chance to burn off.  The fog was still present when we returned to the dock at 2 pm although the visibility was about 1/4 mile by then.

When we left you litterly could not see the end of the dock.  I followed my GPS track out into West Bay, but all bets were off for my game plan.  I was going to look for mud slicks in the open bay, but it just wasn't going to happen that day.

I motored out to some go-to spots, but we just couldn't find them.  I hit one of my redfish holes and we only pulled out 1 fish around 19 inches.  Finally I made a desperation phone call and found a buddy that was doing pretty good just around the corner from where we were.  It was on as soon as we stopped the boat.  We managed 8 trout on our first drift and then turned around for a second, but it was too late.  We caught the very tail end of the tide.  The boat wasn't moving a bit.  We caught a couple of more trout and then made our way in.

I actually wanted to fish this area, but with an 8 year old in the boat I didn't want to go very far in the fog.  He had a blast and caught the majority of the fish.  I told him that we'd do netter next time.

Get ready, West Galveston Bay is about to blow wide open.  This cool weather should drop the water temps into the mid 50's.  That along with the wet fall we've had add up to Great Fishing in West Bay!

We will be targeting mid bay reefs and mud slicks on lower tides and fishing the flats during flood tides for the "Big Girls"!  You can bet I'll be out every day that the winds allow this time of year.  Hope to see you there.

Last week we saw good numbers of fish from Tinity Bay and the start of some good action in West Bay.  While the birds continue to work in the mornings in Trinity bay, the afternoons are a little slow.  I was forced to start throwing bait on my evening trips, but the reward was well worth it.  The size of the fish were worth the wait, we had several fish in the 3 1/2 to 4 pound range.  On other days we couldn't find as many keepers in the slow outgoing tide, but we managed to catch a lot of trout with an occasional red mixed in.

Wednesday I fished West Bay due to the winds and was suprised to find a few birds working down there as well.  The water wasn't in the greatest shape, but we did manage to put a few in the box as well a releasing plenty of 14 inch fish.

The water in West Bay has been gorgeous the past few days even with the bad weather.  I'm looking for the bite to really turn on this week with the temps dropping into the 40's.  All the rains we have had should drive the fish out of the bayous and marshes into the middle of the bay for easy pickins!

Fishing has definitely improved over the past week.  Good numbers of Trout and an occasional redfish have been the norm.  There are plenty of flounder to be caught as well, but with the new limit of 2 per person, I haven't taken the time to catch them.  The flounder bite should be excellent the first part of December when the limits go back up to 5. so mark your calendars!

The fishing should be incredible this week with the cooler temps.  The fish should be in a frenzy bulking up for the winter.  Last year I had my best fish of the year the week before Thanksgiving, and this is the first big front of the year.

Hope to see you on the water soon!

Last week the weather was beautiful and the fishing was just as nice.  The full moon slowed the bite early in the week but later in the day the bite turned on.  Fishing the birds has been picking up and the water is shaping up well after the 6+ inches of rain a week ago.

Most days are producing at least half limits of trout on soft plastics with a ton of throw backs mixed in.

It's only going to get better as the the water temp continues to fall and the fish begin to bulk up for winter.

Fishing has been hampered lately by the weather.  However, the fishing should be on next week as we are not supposed to have any rain in the forecast for the next 7 days.  The birds have started working in Trinity and the flounder have been showing up in the channels throughout Galveston Bay.  The last week or so has produced well on days that we could actually get into Trinity.  On the windier days we have had to retreat to some inland bays and most of the fish were under the limit.

Hopefully by Monday the water will have settled down after the 30 mph winds we had yesterday.

Canceled another one today.  The rains they are upon us!  The forcast calls for a good chance of rain for the rest of the week.  Hopefully the weekend will clear out and let us on the water.  Lows are dropping into the high 60's.   This, along with the rain, should bring the water temps down.  I was reading 76 on Saturday, so we should be getting down around 72 by the weekend.  The rains along with the passing front will hopefully kick off the fall pattern and we should start to see good numbers of birds working the middle of the bay.

Sept 19
Fished with a single today.  We headed out at dawn and although the winds were light this morning, we went through some nasty NW gusts while heading east.  It was bumpy to say the least.  We arrived at our destination and found the fish pretty quick.  We made a few drifts over this reef and had quite a few hook-ups.  The majority of the fish were sand trout, but we did manage a few specs in the mix.  We hit a few other spots throughout the morning and only found Sand trout on the other reefs, but good numbers and a few with sizes up to 15 inches.  We headed in around 1 with 9 in the box, but around 40 - 50 fish caught total.  A very fun day on the water.  The water temp was 76 degrees and the fall pattern is starting to take shape.  The Sand Trout are out in big numbers.  These fish are perfect frying size with many in the 12-15 inch range.  We probably could have boxed 15 - 20 of them if we wanted.

Sept 14

Haven't been out much lately due to the much needed rains.  Friday I went on a scouting mission that proved to be a waste of time.  The winds weren't strong, but the wrong direction for where I was.  The water was in decent shape but I just couldn't find any fish.

Today I took a group back to East Bay.  As usual, the fish were still on the mid-bay reefs.  They weren't eating well but we managed a few fish almost every drift.  We finished the day with 13 keeper specs and 3 sand trout.

Hopefully once the weather improves and the tides recede, the marsh will drain and we will see some bird activity.  Last year we started seeing birds in August, but due to the dry summer they have been a no show so far.

AUG 29

Fishing today with a group of three.  We headed out before daybreak and went East.  We arrived at our destination and began catching trout without delay.  Soaking Croaker over mid-bay reefs, we had a few fish in the box after only one drift.  The winds turned a little more out of the north and our second drift missed the school.  We re positioned the boat and got on them again.  We boxed a 22, a 23, and a 24 inch trout.  The latter being my guest, Bill, personal best ever.  He has a few trips to galveston bay under his belt so this was a great accomplishment.  The total for the day was 18 specs and a couple of Sand Trout.

AUG 30

Today I had the pleasure of fishing with a repeat group from last month, a father son duo and their nephew.  Last month's trip ended with the youngster putting a whooping on the other two.  Today history repeated itself as he not only caught the most trout, he caught the majority of the fish in the box.  We didn't make it to yesterday's spot until around noon and it was already over on that reef.  We did manage to pick up some decent fish all in the 17-18 inch range.

AUG 31

What a difference  day makes.  After a week of nice weather, today the winds were coming out of the NE at 12 - 15 mph.  We tried to fish East Bay, but the winds were too much.  Although the water was still in decent condition, the winds had it white capping.  We moved off looking for calmer conditions and found ourselves all the way in West Bay.  We found some protected water and made a couple of drifts that yielded some nice fish.  We ended up with 8 trout with 1 going 22 and another going 24 inches along with a couple of redfish (21 and 26) and 2 flounder, both around 17 inches.

Changes are a coming folks.  The weather is beginning to shift into a fall pattern.  Soon we will be fishing the birds and the action will be fast and furious!  Stay tuned.

AUG 25 and 26

Fishing has been good the past couple of days.  I have been launching near the causway and fishing the Railroad bridge until around 10 then heading to the Galveston channel where the bit seems to be better late in the morning.  I haven't had any limits, but everyday has yeilded better than half limits.  It should continue for the next couple of weeks until the birds start working good.

AUG 20

Fished with a threesome today.  The weather was threatening all around but was clear at the Galveston Yacht Basin.  We headed out to a spot off the Galveston channel, but there was too much traffic out this morning.  We caught only one fish and decided to move.  As I was heading across the Houston ship channel I received a call from another guide that was fishing the same area I was heading to.  He said he was taking cover and dodging lightening bolts.  I quickly turned around and headed to the railroad bridge.  We caught 6 or 7 trout and headed back toward the dock stopping again at the Galveston channel.  We picked up another 4 before going in.  Although we only had 12 trout we still made out better than most boats out that day.  I guess the weather hampered all the boats.

Aug 21

Fished a group of 4 guys today.  The weather was beautiful and the front that blew through yesterday had the humidity and temperature down a bit.  The fishing was a bit slow, but we managed to catch some good fish.  We made it to east bay today and the northwest wind was blowing around 8 - 10 mph.  We made long drifts and caught 2 - 3 fish per drift.  We ended the day with 20 fish in the box.  Much easier than yesterday.

AUG 20

Today was a blast.  I had a great couple, Jimmy and Leslie,  down for some R & R on the water.  It was a bit breezy, especially for August.  We threw some top-waters on our first drift and just as I was giving up on them I had a strike about 20 feet from the boat.  Of course there was no chance of getting this one in.  On our second drift I hooked them up with croaker, and the bite was on.  Before I could get all three lines in the water Leslie was hooked up.  Turns out she was hooked up with a 27 inch redfish.  We caught 2 or 3 trout per drift and easily filled their 20 fish limit along with a couple of sand trout.  Not a bad day on the water considering they heard another guide trying to cancel his trip this morning!

AUG 18

Fishing today with my son, Ronnie, before he heads back to school next week.  We got rained on a little on our way accross the ship channel.  As soon as we arrived at the jetty rocks I tied on a topwater for both of us.  He had never thrown a topwater before today and had a blow-up on his first cast.  It took me a couple of cast, but I got a couple of blow-ups.  Then, after only about ten casts, I saw the rocks begin to dissapear with the coming rains.

We headed down the bolivar beachfront.  Still throwing tops, I hooked a 20 inch trout.  Nothing else would hit.  We watched as the storm passed and headed back to the rocks.  Throwing croaker now, we couldn't get anything to hit.  We went up and down the rocks and couln't find a fish.  We headed back in and fished some protected water in the Galveston channel.  We started catching them right away.

After a few drifts we ran out of bait and finished the day with 10 specks and 2 sand trout.  not a bad day by any stretch.

Aug 15

Today was one of those days.  I hosted 3 wonderful ladies to a day on the water.  When we pulled up to one of my favorite hotspots, the bait was everywhere.  I quickly baited up their hooks and gave them a lesson on how to fish croaker.  After all three were in the water, I baited up and tossed out.  Not even a minute passed before I set the hook on my first trout.  As I eased it toward the net it spit the hook.  I quickly reloaded and BAM another fish on.  I told them "They're Here!".  I reloaded once more and There's Another one!  I could not get these fish to cooperate to save my life.  I figures with this many fish, lets try topwater.  As soon as my lure hit the water a small trout knocked it into the air.  Every cast I got at least 1 blow-up.  I landed a fish on my third cast.  Caught a throw back a few casts later and then another keeper.  In all I caught 7 fish with 4 in the box in a matter of half an hour and my ladies just couldn't get bit.

We tried a couple of other spots with no luck, then headed out to the jetties.  We began getting bites immediately, only problem was whatever was eaten was taking the hook as well.  Probably Spanish Mackerel or sharks.  We caught several trout and a Mackerel and called it a day.
